Parents Also Ask

What is assimilation in speech?

Assimilation (or consonant harmony) is when one sound in a word changes to match another sound. "Dog" → "gog" (D becomes G), "cup" → "pup" (C becomes P). The child makes both consonants the same.

When does assimilation go away?

Assimilation typically resolves by age 3. If your child still uses consonant harmony after age 3, consider evaluation. It's one of the earlier patterns to disappear.
