What Speech Therapists Say
Little Wheels is used by 25+ Speech-Language Pathologists in clinical therapy sessions across the United States. Here's what they say about using vehicle-themed learning for speech development.
How I Designed Little Wheels for Speech Practice
I'm not an SLP—I'm a parent who builds in collaboration with 25+ Speech-Language Pathologists who use Little Wheels in sessions and at home. Here's what makes it feel like speech-therapy-style practice, not just cute games:
Interest-Based Learning
I start with what your child already loves—vehicles—so they want to practice. A child who won't say "ball" will happily say "excavator" 20 times.
Modeling & Repetition
Every tap gives clear models + gentle "your turn" moments, not rapid-fire drills. Kids hear it, then try it, at their own pace.
Turn-Taking & Joint Attention
Call-and-response design, shared focus on the same truck or train—ideal for co-play between parent and child or therapist and client.
Low-Stimulation Design
No timers, no streaks, no flashing rewards. Calm visuals, short sessions, positive reinforcement through play—not pressure.
Real Voices & Natural Phrases
Natural speech, not robotic text-to-speech. Sounds like real conversation so kids learn how words actually sound.
Supplement, Not Replacement
Talk & Listen is a practice tool—extra reps between sessions or a way to start while on a waitlist. Always follow your SLP's guidance.

How to Use Little Wheels for Common Goals
Whether you're an SLP assigning homework or a parent practicing at home, here's how to map Talk & Listen to specific speech goals:
Use: Tier 1 vehicles, simple onomatopoeias ("beep beep", "vroom", "honk")
Try: Co-play 5–10 minutes, one or two favorite vehicles per session. Let your child tap and hear, then model the sound yourself.
Example vehicles: Car, Bus, Train, Fire Truck (simple sounds kids naturally want to make)
Use: Phoneme filtering + syllable indicators on license plates
Try: "Pick 3 vehicles with your target sound and practice each three times." Use the syllable claps for awareness.
Example: For /g/ sounds, use Garbage Truck ("go", "get", "dump", "garbage"). For /r/, try Race Car, Tractor, Fire Truck.
Use: Vehicle actions and Vehicle Tales storybooks
Try: Model short phrases while your child taps: "bus go", "truck stop", "car fast", "train coming"
Example vehicles: School Bus (bus go, bus stop), Dump Truck (dump it, truck full), Ambulance (go fast, help people)
Use: Vehicle categories (Emergency, Construction, Farm, etc.)
Try: "Let's find all the vehicles that help people" or "Show me vehicles on a farm"
Categories: Wee-Ooo Wheels (emergency), Hard Hat Wheels (construction), Barnyard Wheels (farm), Choo-Choo Wheels (trains)
Use: Language toggle (English ↔ Spanish)
Try: "Hear it in English, then in Spanish, then choose which one your child repeats." Great for heritage language maintenance.
Example: Fire Truck → Camión de Bomberos, Ambulance → Ambulancia, Tractor → Tractor
💡 Pro tip: Each vehicle has multiple sounds and words to practice. A Garbage Truck isn't just "garbage truck"—it's also "dump", "trash", "go", "stop", "full", "empty". Explore each vehicle's sounds in the app.
Important Note
Talk & Listen is a practice tool, not a replacement for evaluation or therapy. It works best as:
- • Extra practice between therapy sessions
- • A way to start at home while you're on a waitlist
- • Supplemental homework assigned by your SLP
Always follow guidance from your Speech-Language Pathologist or pediatrician.

"I really like the Sound Explorer page and how it gives the child some time to practice and "hear" themselves. The toys on the home page are great for pediatrics. My students typically lean towards the wheels on the bus and old mcdonald had a farm."
"I enjoy the "Repeat with Reddy" section where the kids can imitate the sounds. It's very easily organized. The stories are a nice touch too."
Why This Design — and What We Can’t Claim
Interest-Based Learning
Children engage longer and try harder words when content matches their interests (Renninger & Hidi, 2016) — which is why a vehicle-obsessed toddler will attempt "excavator" while refusing generic flashcards.
Vehicle-obsessed toddlers naturally practice complex words like "excavator" when they wouldn't attempt simpler words from generic flashcards.
Multi-Modal Learning
Multisensory input supports learning better than single-channel presentation (Shams & Seitz, 2008); the app pairs each vehicle's sound, image and interaction for that reason.
Little Wheels provides vehicle sounds, images, and interactive tapping for multi-sensory learning.
Transport Schema
Universal toddler fascination with vehicles (transport schema) is a documented developmental stage (Athey, 2007).
Leveraging this natural interest increases engagement and practice frequency.
These citations support the design choices, not the product: Talk & Listen itself has not been studied, and we will not imply otherwise.
