Some parents worry: "My child has significant speech delays. Don't they need structured therapy, not just play?"
This presents a false dichotomy. The most effective speech therapy combines structured elements within playful contexts.
A skilled SLP might have specific target sounds they're working on—but they'll embed practice in play scenarios: "Let's drive the car to the /k/ garage! Can you say 'car'? Great! Now the car goes to get /k/ cookies!"
The structure is there (target sounds, planned repetitions, data collection) but it's wrapped in play so the child remains engaged and motivated.
Play-based doesn't mean unstructured or goalless. It means the path to the goal goes through the child's interests rather than around them.
