What are liquid sounds?

Liquid sounds are L and R—called "liquids" because the tongue flows smoothly during production. They're among the last sounds children master. L typically develops by age 5-6, R by age 6-7.

Why does my child say W instead of L and R?

This is called "gliding"—a very common and normal pattern. Children substitute the easier W sound for harder L and R sounds. "Rabbit" → "wabbit," "love" → "wuv." It typically resolves by age 5-6 for L and age 6-7 for R.
