What is expressive language in simple terms?

Expressive language is output—what comes OUT. It's your child's ability to communicate through words, gestures, facial expressions, and eventually writing. It develops after receptive language (understanding).

Why does my child understand more than they say?

This is completely normal! Receptive language (understanding) always develops before expressive language (speaking). Children understand hundreds of words before they can say them. This gap is especially noticeable in late talkers.
