Build a Simple App
Just for Your Family
You don't need the App Store. You don't need investors. Just solve one problem for your family.
Can I build an app just for my family without coding experience?
Yes. Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) can be built with no-code tools like Glide or Softr in a weekend. They work on any phone, don't require app store approval, and can be shared via a simple link. I built Little Wheels for the App Store, but most family problems don't need that complexity.
Why Most Families Don't Need the App Store
When I tell people I built apps, they assume I mean "submit to Apple, wait for approval, deal with guidelines." But that's only one path—and it's the hardest one.
For most family problems, a Progressive Web App (PWA) is better. It's a website that acts like an app. You can add it to your home screen, use it offline, and share it with family members via a link. No $99/year developer fee. No approval process. No App Store politics.
Here's what's possible: I can turn an existing website into a PWA in a day. A simple single-task family app (chore tracker, meal planner, countdown timer) can be built from scratch in a weekend. You don't need months of development—you need a clear problem and the right tools.
What Problems Are Perfect for Family Apps?
The best family apps solve one specific problem that generic apps don't handle well:
- Chore charts customized to your kids' ages and your house rules
- Meal planning that knows your family's allergies and preferences
- Bedtime routines with your specific steps and timing
- Reward systems tied to your family's values (not generic stars)
- Travel countdown for upcoming family trips
- Grandparent communication tools for long-distance family
If you've ever thought "I wish there was an app that did exactly this"—you can build it yourself.
The Tools (No Coding Required)
No-Code Options
Glide
Turn a Google Sheet into an app. Perfect for lists, trackers, and simple databases.
Softr
Build from Airtable. Great for more complex family systems.
Notion
Not technically an app builder, but many families use it as one.
Carrd
Simple one-page sites. Good for countdowns or single-purpose tools.
If you want to learn actual coding, start with HTML/CSS/JavaScript. But honestly? For family tools, no-code is often better because you can iterate faster.
AI-Assisted Building (The New Way)
Even if you want to code, AI tools have changed the game:
- Replit: Has AI features built in. Describe what you want, it generates code. Great for simple web apps.
- v0 by Vercel: Describe a UI, get React components. Perfect for prototyping.
- Claude/ChatGPT: Ask "How do I build a chore chart app?" and get step-by-step guidance.
You don't need to be a developer anymore. You need to be good at describing what you want and iterating on the results.
The Weekend Build Process
Here's how I'd approach building a family app in a weekend:
- Friday night: Write down the ONE problem you're solving. If you can't explain it in one sentence, you're building too much.
- Saturday morning: Pick your tool and build the core feature. Just the core. No "nice to haves."
- Saturday afternoon: Test with your family. Watch them use it. Don't explain anything—see where they get stuck.
- Sunday: Fix the biggest friction points. Add to home screens. Done.
The goal isn't perfection. It's something that works for YOUR family, built in a weekend.
PWA vs Native App vs Website: Which Do You Need?
| Factor | Website | PWA | Native App |
|---|---|---|---|
| Build time | Hours | Weekend | Months |
| Cost | Free-$20/mo | Free-$50/mo | $99/yr + hosting |
| App Store approval | Not needed | Not needed | Required (days-weeks) |
| Home screen icon | Bookmark only | Yes, like an app | Yes |
| Offline support | No | Basic | Full |
| Device features | Limited | Some (camera, GPS) | Full access |
| Push notifications | No | Yes (limited on iOS) | Yes |
| Can sell to others | Hard | Possible | Yes (App Store) |
| Best for | Info, simple tools | Family tools, trackers | Products, kids apps |
My recommendation: Start with a PWA. If you outgrow it, you'll know exactly what features you actually need in a native app. Most family tools never need to graduate.
When You Actually Need the App Store
PWAs are great for family tools, but they have limits. You need the App Store if:
- You want to sell to other families (not just use it yourself)
- You need deep device integration (camera, sensors, etc.)
- You're building for kids who need COPPA-compliant privacy
- You want offline-first with complex data sync
That's when you graduate to building a real app for the App Store. But start with a PWA first—you'll learn what actually matters before investing months in development.
Beyond the Basics
This page covers the concepts. But if you want to move faster, I've built systems that make family app development repeatable:
- Tool selection frameworks for choosing the right no-code platform
- AI prompts for generating app ideas and features
- Testing checklists for validating with your family
- Upgrade paths when you outgrow no-code
These are what I walk through on calls—practical guidance for your specific situation.

I'm Sean Record—founder, product manager, and solo developer behind Little Wheels. I shipped 2 iOS apps, built this entire website, and know the difference between "needs the App Store" and "just needs a good PWA."
I also build for clients: Don't want to DIY? I can turn your website into a PWA in a day, or build a simple single-purpose app from scratch in a weekend—for a fraction of what agencies charge (they typically quote $10K+).
